The difference here is that in George R. R. Martin’s fourth and fifth books—A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons—far too many new characters are added, including far too many new point-of-view characters. Instead of hearing about Dorne, or seeing it from the perspective of a character we’ve already come to know, we are given all new POV chapters in Dorne. It saps the place of its mystery. And it makes it harder than ever to keep track of Martin’s sprawling plot.

The same goes for the once-mysterious Iron Islands. Maybe it sounded like a good idea to immerse readers in these new kingdoms, often from the perspective of people living in them already, but it doesn’t actually work all that well, and the narrative suffers.
Grayson argues that Arianne is simply a well-written, interesting character who deserves a spot in the cast: ”Assuming she’s out, we lose a really interesting character, another tough, intelligent woman in an inherently sexist (on purpose, mind you) fantasy world. Yet she’s vulnerable too, and she’s forced to learn a lot over time. She is, in other words, a well-rounded, smartly written character.”
I just can’t muster the same passion for a character whose inclusion in the books feels so extraneous to the story we’ve come to care about so far.
Realistically, HBO should be cutting characters left and right, trimming down and tightening up the sprawling plot at every opportunity. I’ll be quite frank: Martin didn’t inspire me to care about the Martells after Oberyn. Likewise, their bleak counterparts the Greyjoy family, outside of Theon and his sister Yara (Asha in the books,) do very little for me as a reader.
Indeed, very few characters added after the third book have made much of a mark as far as I’m concerned—often because they distract from the core cast I’ve come to actually care about; sometimes because Martin kills them off too quickly to care.
The point being, cutting Arianne et alia isn’t cause for concern, it’s a good omen. It means Weiss and Benioff continue to be unafraid to change Martin’s books to better fit the medium. Was Arianne necessarily the right choice? Couldn’t they have cut someone else instead? It’s quite possible, but Arianne is just a main character in a side story to begin with.
Cutting back the already bloated cast is essential to creating a story we can all follow and enjoy. It’s good that HBO recognizes this and is cutting accordingly—killing Martin’s characters before they have a chance to meet their maker in the show itself.
