What: Starz "Outlander" premiere at Spreckels Theatre Friday nightWho was there: "Outlander" author Diana Gabaldon, producer Ron Moore, actors Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan,
Great Bull Run draws thousand,
True Religion Jeans Clearance, Tobias Menzies, Graham McTavish and Lotte Verbeek. (And lots of male actors who posed in kilts atop faux boulders in the theater lobby.)Why we went: To see the first episode in the romantic/time traveling series, which airs on Starz Aug. 9. (Biggest applause? For actor Sam Heughan, who plays the hunky Scottish hero. He wore a kilt.) Outlander : Official Trailer Any spoilers?: No. And if the first episode is any indication, the series will stick closely to the books.Best tidbit: Author Gabaldon's cameo is in episode No. 4. But that's all she could say.Why no subtitles for the Gaelic?: Because the book is told from heroine Claire's point of view and she doesn't understand Gaelic, said producer/show writer Ron Moore. What did the actors say?: Tobias Menzies (plays Frank Randall and "Black Jack") was totally jet-lagged; Heughan says his character gets beat up a lot; Balfe says if she looks confused in the series, she is 鈥 just like her character (Claire.)On filming in Scotland: It's amazing but the weather is really rough. Moore said that Doune Castle 鈥 a real castle 鈥 is being used as the book's Castle Leoch. Doune, he noted, is also the castle in the opening of "Monty Python and the Holy Grail."Gabaldon's fave line in TV series that's not in the book?: "Why Mrs. Randall, I believe you left your undergarments at home."
