Ekiti State governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, has said intellect and activism are fast becoming unpopular in Nigeria.
The governor, who made this known in a short speech at a maiden awards ceremony of the Senate Press Corps, in Abuja,
Annoying Concert Behavior, said that the situation was frustrating.
The governor said the reigning word that determined popularity now is 鈥済rassroots.鈥?/p>
According to him, Nigerians appeared to be saying that if you were an elite or an intellect, you should be thrown into the dustbin and not to be associated with.
He, however, said that the recognition given to some Senators by the Senate Press Corps was a testimony that all was not lost, adding that the media could still serve as the last defender of democracy.
He said: 鈥淚 know that intellect is not supposed to be popular in our country right now. What counts for popularity is what I hear is grassroots. If you are an intellectual, you are an elite and an elite is what should be thrown to into the dustbin not to be associated with.鈥?/p>
He added that: 鈥淭here is so much about our country that is very frustrating. There are times that you have to ask yourself, if you are a politician, whether it is worth all the trouble at all.鈥?/p>
He, however, said that he was proud of the contributions of Senator Olubunmi Adetunmbi, one of the award recipients at the event, adding that the recognition from the media was worth celebrating.
