I’m sure you have seen the adorable pictures and videos of Steph Curry and his daughter, Riley Curry, at the Game 1 post-game press conference. If you haven’t, you’re missing out and need to google it.
Despite all the cute and precious things that young Riley did at the podium, Curry’s action of bringing his 2-year-old daughter to the press conference has sparked a lot of anger from journalists on social media.
Why did a young girl anger so many journalists? Well, some media members found little miss Riley to be too distracting for them to properly do their job. These journalists had tight deadlines and found that Riley’s presence made it hard for them to hear Steph answer their questions and talk about the game. Brett Friedlander, an ACC sports reporter, openly criticized Curry’s "unprofessional" act on twitter.
"Steph Curry’s kid is cute. That doesn’t mean she should have been at presser. There are professionals on deadlines there w/ jobs to do, too,"
As an aspiring journalist/broadcaster, I understand that journalists have tight deadlines and that pressure is tough to quickly get all the information needed for a report, especially after a hectic NBA Playoff game. That being said, I don’t believe journalists should be complaining about Steph Curry bringing his daughter to the podium for a couple of reasons:
1. Reports say Steph’s press conference took nine minutes and that he was prompt and focused, despite his daughter’s presence. Once Riley got "antsy" and tired of sitting there, Golden State’s security manager took her back to the waiting room and let Steph finish out the conference by himself.
2. Steph is not the first player to let his child tag along with him at the podium. Blake Griffin, Jason Kidd, and other NBA fathers have brought their children to post-game press conferences with no harsh backlash from the media.
3. Riley Curry made the news noteworthy. How many times have there been post game press conferences after NBA games? Thousands. Do the typical press conferences, where players nonchalantly answer questions about the game, gain a lot of public attention? Maybe from NBA fans, but not from everyone. Riley Curry’s adorable actions gained national attention from people that don’t even follow the NBA. If anything journalists should be thanking Steph and his daughter for being the highlight of the news and getting their work more exposure and publicity.
4. In a statement released today, Curry said he wasn’t planning to bring Riley to the podium and that she made the decision to come along at the last-minute. (New Pittsburgh Courier)
"I said hello to them after the game and I told them I had to do media so I’ll be right back, and I think (Ayesha) had asked Riley if she wanted to go with me. Riley had told her yes before I even got around the corner, and I’m like, `No, I’ll just go do it real quick.’ And Riley gave me the look like, `I’m going with you.’ She wasn’t taking no for an answer at that point."
In my opinion, there’s no reason to criticize Steph Curry for bringing his daughter to a press conference one time, especially when he wasn’t planning to do it originally. He wasn’t going to turn down his daughter’s request to go with him, as he had his own experience in front of the media with his dad when he was young too.
Call it unprofessional or distracting, but Riley Curry’s waving and funny gestures towards her dad are what made the post-game press conference noteworthy news. Not to mention, it showed the more personal, family-side of Steph Curry’s life, a side many fans don’t usually get to see.
