CEDAR RAPIDS Jennifer Reekers and Diana Kain want people to be as proactive about their hearing health as they are about having their eyes examined and their teeth cleaned.
The two audiologists recently opened Heartland Hearing Center, a full-time audiology practice offering hearing and tinnitus services in Cedar Rapids.

Reekers experienced hearing loss as a child when a tumor developed behind her eardrum, requiring reconstructive surgery, while Kain s older brother has had severe hearing loss since 18 months of age.

The two women met while Kain was on the faculty at the University of Iowa. They remained in contact after Reekers completed the program and became close friends.
We ve been saying for years that we should open our own practice, Kain said.
Their discussions became more serious after Kain left the university to enter private practice about four years ago.

At Heartland Hearing Center, Reekers and Kain place an emphasis on the patient relationship.

The month of May has been designated as Better Hearing Month.
