CONNECT 6 TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMORECHARLOTTE, N.C. -- In a series of early morning raids, FBI agents arrested 16 suspected members of a violent street gang named MS-13.
The arrests came after a grand jury indicted 37 suspected members of the gang that has its roots in Los Angeles and has grown to include some 6,000 members across the country, according to estimates by investigators.
Those indicted locally face charges of racketeering and conspiracy, while some are also facing additional charges including murder and attempted murder.
Investigators say they believe three murders, two in Charlotte and one in Rock Hill, were committed by gang members who were part of the indictment.
Those arrested were brought to the federal court in Charlotte where they made initial appearances before a judge.
Nicole Villagomez said FBI agents kicked in her door early Wednesday morning to arrest her husband.
She says he is not a gang member.
"He is a nice man. He cries at the drop of a hat. He goes to work, comes home and on Sundays we are with the family."
Each of those charged will be held behind bars until a detention hearing scheduled for next Tuesday.
Of the 37 named in the indictment the FBI is still looking for five of them.
The indictment charges each of the 37 alleged gang members with one count of racketeering influenced corrupt organization conspiracy. The named defendants are:

"As outlined in today's indictment, the alleged MS-13 gang members have committed numerous violent crimes, including armed robberies, assaults, and murders, for the benefit of the criminal enterprise," said Acting U.S. Attorney Rose. "Today's charges send a clear message to gangsters who think their gang affiliation puts them beyond the law's reach. Prosecutors and law enforcement officers will continue to work hand-in-hand to identify and prosecute gang offenders whose violent acts create mayhem in our streets and devastate communities."
