Syndergaard was good for the Mets, allowing only three earned runs in six innings of work. Unfortunately for him, Pirates ace was just better. Cole (W, 6-2) tossed 8.1 innings of one run ball to help the Pirates (19-22) beat the Mets (24-19) 4-1.

The Pirates got on the board first in the bottom of the second inning. delivered an RBI single to kick off the scoring. followed with an RBI double to put the Bucs up 2-0. The Mets were able to strike back in the top of the third, getting two men in scoring position with one out. Cole uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Juan Lagares to score and cut the deficit to one run. That was all the Mets could muster in that frame as Cole struck out Curtis Granderson and got Eric Campbell to fly out to left to strand Kevin Plawecki at third.
