The ground-floor W.P.A murals at get all the attention. No one sees the seven second floor murals because you have to take a tour to get there due to limited space.
It is worth the effort to see Jane Berlandina’s “Home Life” mural which is of a completely different style and medium from the “working man and woman” murals everyone knows.
Among the 27 murals at Coit, “Home Life” is the only one that had never before been restored, in the 80s years since the murals were installed.
The improvements are subtle, then so is the mural itself. Its interior view is a counterpoint to Lucien Labaudt’s panorama of Powell Street.
The oversaw the most extensive restoration in the tower’s 80-year history. The second floor murals re-opened in late August, to join the ground floor murals which re-opened to much hoopla last May.
