Tuesday s primary election is no low-key prelude to the real thing in November. Republicans in particular have some heavy lifting to do, and for a rapt national audience.
Indeed, often-ignored Kansas claimed three spots in a of the week s primaries by the Washington Post, which put the contest between Sen. Pat Roberts and tea partier/radiologist Milton Wolf at No. 3, the nasty face-off of current 4th District congressman Mike Pompeo and his predecessor Todd Tiahrt at No. 6, and the Big First challenge by educator Alan LaPolice of combative two-term congressman Tim Huelskamp at No. 9 (with the Post noting there really isn t any getting to Huelskamp s right ).
This being Kansas, the winning Republican will take it all in some races on Tuesday s ballots, whether or not there s a Democrat running in the fall. But there isn t in one Sedgwick County District Court race and in three area Kansas House districts, letting Republicans choose for everybody.
Two GOP contests for Sedgwick County Commission could be decisive not only for commission control but also the area s economic development. Moderate Republicans will try to retake some legislative ground in several House primaries.
Goddard voters also will decide whether they want a 1-cent citywide sales tax for capital improvements and infrastructure and property-tax relief. Though it s the to improve itself, Goddard may not be the last: Also on Tuesday, the Wichita City Council is expected to decide whether to put its own citywide sales tax on the November ballot.
