Suspected shooter Delmar Davis had gun shop job
PALM SPRINGS Those who knew Delmar Davis described him as a well liked friend and well known armorer and gunsmith, who at one time worked at Guns of Distinction in Palm Desert.
Palm Springs police believe Davis shot and killed his "on again, off again" girlfriend Cynthia Herrold, 43, and a second female who neighbors have said was Herrold's daughter, before killing himself.
The Riverside County coroner's office released Davis' and Herrold's names Saturday, but has yet to release the name of the girl.
"There's a lot of evil in the world," Holcomb said. "When you have a bad back injury like that, you never know how people might try to take the pain away."
Neighbor Al Smith said he liked Herrold and had seen her daughter playing outside around the corner from where she lived.
"The boyfriend was a strange duck though, and some were surprised the woman moved in with him," Smith said. "I stayed away. Thursday.
Heidi Glass, who lives next door, said she called police Thursday night after hearing seven shots, and someone yelling, "Gotcha! Gotcha! Gotcha!"
A friend who's staying with her while working at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament in Indian Wells heard two more shots from the same house the day before, Glass said.
She said Herrold had lived next door with her daughter for some time. She'd been with her boyfriend for some time, as well, but he had only moved in a couple weeks ago.
Lars Roest, who lives one street over from the scene, said he didn't hear any commotion Thursday night but knew Herrold and her daughter. He often played with the girl at the community's pool.
Investigators asked the Riverside County District Attorney's Office to get a search warrant for the house,brandanblake.com/contact.html, which was served Friday morning.
A hazardous device team worked much of Friday to clear numerous firearms and potentially destructive items found inside the duplex.
The team was supplied by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department at the behest of Palm Springs police.
It conducted "a safety sweep of the residence after the homicide investigation observed military devices," said Deputy Armando Munoz, sheriff's department spokesman. "They cleared it. It's safe and they found firearms and illegal items used to make destructive devices."
Munoz would not be more specific about what was found inside the duplex.
Herrold and the girl were homicide victims, according to the coroner's website, which classified Davis' death as suicide.
The girl was a student in the Palm Springs Unified School District, district spokesman Joan Boiko said Friday.
The district's crisis team and grief counselors are available to students and staff who are trying to cope with the deaths, Boiko said.
According to Riverside County court records, Herrold went through a divorce in 2010. She had another child, a son, who lives with his father in Banning.
