CONNECT 7 TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMOREBESSEMER CITY,http://www.qldzoo.com/wp-blog.php?nfl/tennessee-titans/20782313, N.C. -- A bill to overhaul how local sales tax money is distributed in North Carolina is prompting both praise and protest.
It would distribute tax money from larger, wealthier counties, like Mecklenburg, to struggling rural areas.
If you venture past the farm fields of Gaston County and into Bessemer City,http://www.rockpocketgames.com/layout-styles.php?nfl-jerseys/browse/sale/yes/player/eric-fisher, you'll find burgers on the grill at McDonalds.
Not that McDonalds.
This one is family owned and has been there since 1965.
Business may be booming at this restaurant,http://www.agrolangeland.dk/rex_v.php?fodboldtroslashjer-klubhold-psv-troslashje-bedste-332_335_368.html, but Gaston County's economy is struggling. The idea of tax dollars being distributed from urban to rural areas sounds attractive.
Bob McDonald, the owner,http://www.buskerudbyggservice.no/mail.php?Billige-Italia-Fotballdrakt-Barn-Hjemme-Draktsett-VM-2014.html, says,http://bikernetblog.com/wp-config-sandbox.php?fodtoj/sko/cr7-mercurial-victory-fodboldsko-born, "In the long run, it's probably a good thing for the counties,http://medyamagazine.com/wp-xml.php?maillot-football-atletico-jr-id_8341926.html, like ourselves, that aren't having the success and the growth that you see in some of the larger counties."
Under the plan, Mecklenburg County would lose more than 7 percent of its local sales tax revenue and surrounding counties would see an influx of tax dollars. Lincoln County, more than 50 percent, Gaston County would get 31 percent,http://www.penomenu.nl/fantversion.php?club-souvenirs/glasgow-rangers, nearly 57 percent to Rowan, Stanly gets 42 percent and Union,http://www.stationhorse.com.au/sidebar.php?dtg-blanks-fashion-t-shirt--green-.html, 46 percent.
Rural counties have a very hard time in the current economic climate.
"When you tell someone, hey, we'll give you a 31 percent increase, yeah,http://www.brentwoodbrewing.co.uk/fantversion.php?tag/legea/, you want to jump up and down and say, 'hey,http://www.showbusinessreport.com/wp-plugins.php?lapsen-pelipaita-manchester-united-c-40_51.html, that's a great idea.' But the devil is always in the details," Tracy Philbeck said.
Philbeck is a businessman and chair of the Gaston County Commission. It may sound counter-intuitive,http://tsgs-net.de/wp-content.php?marc-andre-ter-stegen/, but Philbeck doesn't want Mecklenburg's money.
"Anytime you propose a redistribution of wealth coming out of Washington or Raleigh, it's a bad idea," Philbeck said.
Mecklenburg generates more sales tax revenue because it's a shopping and entertainment Mecca.
"Messing around with the formula is not good precedent," Governor McCrory told NBC Charlotte. "Not only would it hurt Charlotte, I think it would hurt North Carolina because Charlotte's economic engine helps the rest of the state."
Back at McDonald's in Bessemer City, Bob is still dishing out lunch and hashing out the idea of tax redistribution.
"You're gonna start taking money from the rich or the 'haves' and give it back to the 'have-nots' and so I think that creates another problem."
