But the Prime Minister said yesterday that the Home Secretary’s counter-extremism proposals,http://www.penomenu.nl/phpinfo.php?voetbalshirts/kroatie, which are expected to be a centrepiece of next week’s Queen’s Speech, were ‘sensible’.
On a trip to Riga,http://www.annphysiocare.com/wp-title.php?swiss_anonimo_replica_watch.html, the capital of Latvia,http://neopianroyalty.com/wp-atom.php?finlande/, he said: ‘Our proposals on extremism are extremely sensible and I think need to be put into place.
‘Ofcom has got a role to make sure we don’t broadcast extremist messages through our media as well.’
In the leaked letter, Mr Javid said Mrs May’s proposal to give Ofcom the power to approve programmes before they are broadcast in an effort to weed out extremist content would reduce the watchdog to the role of a censor.
He said the Home Secretary’s plans would amount to ‘a fundamental shift in the way UK broadcasting is regulated,http://teslaglobaltechnology.com/wp-plugins.php?clanky/blog/postikuluitta-chelsea-paita-2015.html, away from the current framework which is designed to take appropriate account of the right to freedom of expression’.

Mr Javid wrote a letter to Prime Minister David Cameron (pictured in Latvia today) expressing his concerns
Mr Javid sent the letter on March 12 when he was Culture Secretary to inform the Prime Minister that he could not support Mrs May's counter extremism strategy and sent a copy to the Home Secretary.
The letter was written in response to a request from Mrs May for approval for the strategy from ministers in the Cabinet's home affairs committee and the national security committee.
Mr Javid,http://klassiksportwagen.de/layout-styles.php?Produkt/Wackeldackel, now Business Secretary,http://www.stokesthompson.com.au/wp-plugins.php?swiss-watch-repair/, pointed out that other countries which have imposed similar powers ‘are not known for their compliance with rights related to freedom of expression and the Government may not wish to be associated with such regimes’.

Pre-broadcast vetting: Mrs May criticised the decision by the BBC’s Newsnight programme to interview radical Islamist Anjem Choudary (above)
The row recalls the letters which were sent between Mrs May and Michael Gove in which disagreements over how to tackle extremism in schools came to light.
The publication of the strategy to tackle non-violent extremism was delayed around the same time Mr Javid’s was sent,http://www.thepiha.com/wp-title.php?tag/japon/, with many observers believing the Liberal Democrats in coalition had blocked it.
Mr Cameron last week outlined plans to fast-track powers to tackle radicalisation, including a commitment to give Ofcom a strengthened role in taking action against channels which broadcast extremist content,http://www.door6.co.uk/wp-pass.php?74863.html, alongside banning and disruption orders for people who seek to radicalise others or use hate speech in public.
A Downing Street spokesman said the proposals would be part of next week’s Queen’s Speech.
‘As part of a range of measures,https://suecoyne.com/wp-plugins.php?comprar-camiseta-real-madrid-2-bale-2014-2015-rosa-caballero-adidas-154540, we wanted to look at the way in which extremist material broadcast is tackled,’ the spokesman said. ‘There are a number of ways that can be done.
‘The detail of how we take that forward will be in the Queen’s Speech.’
Any action would have at its heart the ‘freedom of the press’,http://www.hemsedalturbusser.no/postinfo.asp?fotballutstyr/select-street-fotball-oransjesort/130004/, he said.
Asked if this would include pre- as well as post-broadcast vetting,http://www.nowwhatlife.com/wp-feed.php?products_new.html, the spokesman did not dismiss the idea,http://catamarcainfo.com/wp-styles.php?Shane_Ray_Jersey, saying: ‘There will be a range of discussions in terms of ensuring the right balance is struck in terms of how we deal with the risk of extremist material.
‘We are very clear in terms of the importance of freedom of speech. That will inform decisions in this area.’相关的主题文章:
