Decoration Day — to become known as Memorial Day in later years — is being observed at Linkville Cemetery in this undated post card from Klamath Falls. The hilltop cemetery located on the outskirts of town had a commanding view of the surrounding countryside in the days before trees were planted.Numerous veterans of the Civil War, and some from the Indian wars, had been buried at Linkville by this time. The crowd that gathered came on foot, on horseback or by carriage, and by automobile. The community band is assembled at right. The numerous 48-star flags seen here don't offer much help in dating this photo.Better clues can be seen in the skyline of the growing town captured in the background by an unknown photographer. At far left is the Central Elementary School on Main Street. Just right of center is Klamath County High School above High Street. Just left of the high school is the steeple from the original Presbyterian church building. The last church service in that building was held in December 1919. Another clue suggesting a date in the late 1910s is a large coach from the Livermore Hotel, also known as the Houston Hotel, which burned in 1920.The patriotic display of flags may have been inspired by the Great War, later to be known as World War I.About this series:Klamath Postcards is a weekly H N series in partnership with the Klamath County Museum featuring historic Klamath photos from the museum’s collection.相关的主题文章:
