Eatery to aid cancer society
A fundraiser for the local chapter of the American Cancer Society is scheduled Tuesday at S B’s Burger Joint, 14020 N May Ave. Ten percent of the day’s profits will be donated to the organization and to the Relay For Life team hosting the event. Cherokees give $80K to shelter
An $80,000 Cherokee Nation donation will help build a women’s shelter in rural Adair County. The funds were donated to the Orchard Road Community Outreach in Stilwell to complete construction of a 12,000-square-foot building. Bedding, pillows, linens and furniture were donated by Cherokee Nation businesses. The shelter will house up to 10 women and their children and provide a common area, kitchen, laundry and recreation and fitness area.
“Domestic violence has scourged Indian Country for far too long, and the Cherokee Nation is honored to partner with Orchard Road Community Outreach and start combating this epidemic by providing the essential services of housing and safety to the people of Adair County and surrounding areas in hopes of restoring lives and peace of mind to those suffering,” Principal Chief Bill John Baker stated in a news release. The shelter should be finished by the end of the year.
