ACTTAB had 130 employees when it was sold, but Tabcorp said with redundancies and resignations since, there were about 90 staff now, about half casual.
Do you know more? Email
ACTTAB branding is to be replaced by the same TAB logo as NSW and Victoria, but in red.
Mr Oppitz said when Tabcorp had met with the union last year, it had promised the golden egg .
They promised us growth. They promised us bigger and better things for ACTTAB and for Canberra. And basically what we've been served up is a piece of charcoal, he said. It's the end of an era. ACTTAB has existed in the ACT for decades. That, now, by the end of the year, will no longer exist, which was why we fought so hard to try and keep ACTTAB in government hands.
Mr Oppitz expected no more than 20 staff would be left, and almost all of those would be casual staff, on-course and for special events.
A Tabcorp spokesman said ACTTAB and Tabcorp systems were being integrated, with the result that a number of ACTTAB roles will be phased out over the next six months . Most were casual.
He said ACTTAB would maintain a core head office in Canberra, but did not say how many people would be employed.
Employees were being offered voluntary redundancy and any other available opportunities .
We are committed to giving ACT wagering customers a better TAB experience, he said, with plans for new products and TAB facilities in new licensed venues.
Mr Oppitz laid the blame with the government's decision to sell.
At the end of the day, this really sheets home to the feet of the ACT government. We warned the ACT government that we had concerns about the future of ACTTAB ... but they decided to walk a different path for the quick bucks in the beginning and hang the effects.
Chief Minister Andrew Barr said the government was always disappointed when people lose their jobs , but understood the industry was going through transition with new betting technologies and needed investment to stay viable. That wouldn't have happened under government ownership.
Government has no business running gaming businesses, he said.
Tabcorp, owner of the former government TABs in NSW and Victoria, was given a 50-year deal as exclusive owner of the ACT totalisator licence .
Under the deal, it agreed to keep all staff on their existing jobs for at least three months after the sale took effect at the end of October.
It also agreed to keep 20 of its 53 outlets. Tabcorp said on Tuesday it had about 50 and would keep a similar number - eight agencies, 43 in licensed venues and one in the casino.
Mr Oppitz said Tuesday's news was devastating for the city and for ACTTAB's employees.
Some of those employees are very long-running employees. In the midst of the public service job shedding that's taking place, finding work in Canberra is very, very difficult at this point in time, and now to add potentially over 100 people into the unemployment pool is devastating for Canberra and for those who are affected by it.
When he announced the sale last year, Mr Barr said Tabcorp was likely to grow the business. There's every reason to think that having made an investment of this scale that they are going to want to grow this business in a big way and it might lead to more employment, he said then.相关的主题文章:
