While some hail it as an institution worth saving, others criticise sub fusc as 'medieval', arguing that it contributes to the perception of Oxford University as 'elitist' and 'unwelcoming'.
James Blythe, the union's vice-president for access and academic affairs, said he called the vote after some examiners asked to be allowed to stop wearing sub fusc.
Campaigners for change claim the clothing does nothing to improve academic performance and it is 'associated with an elite' that is 'intimidating and inaccessible'.

The formal academic dress sees students wear mortar boards, gown and bow ties to exams, as well as matriculation (pictured) and graduation ceremonies

Thousands of Oxford students (pictured in sub fusc) are expected to vote in this week's referendum
Philosophy, Politics and Economics second year Xavier Cohen said: 'Imagine the message to the country.
'Oxford students take access seriously, and take accusations of elitism seriously.
'We recognise that the under-representation of the less privileged and the over-representation of the privileged is a problem.'
WHAT EXACTLY IS SUB FUSC? 1. Either a dark suit with dark socks, dark skirt with black tights or stockings or dark trousers with dark socks
2. Dark coat if required
3. Black shoes
4. Plain white collared shirt or blouse
5. White bow tie, black bow tie, black full-length tie, or black ribbon.
Undergraduate student Harrison Edmonds has started a Facebook campaign to save sub fusc. Writing in an article for the , he defended the need for compulsory sub fusc, saying that it fostered a community spirit between colleges.
He wrote: 'Subfusc symbolises the shared experiences that as Oxford students we must all undertake, and if we stopped wearing it for exams, that sense of community would also be lost.'
He also argued for the unifying nature of sub fusc, adding that it is 'perfect' for exams which are 'designed to judge solely on academic merit'.
A second question asks whether Oxford students should continue to wear gowns and mortarboards - which are not part of sub fusc but are required examination clothing.
The split between the two questions means that students could be required to continue wearing sub fusc without a mortarboard and gown, or wear a mortarboard and gown with regular dress.
But regardless of how the students vote, academic dress will be maintained for matriculation and graduation - and anyone wishing to wear formal wear to exams will be free to do so.
At a previous referendum in 2006, students voted to continue the tradition.
The University of Oxford has declined to comment ahead of polls closing.相关的主题文章:
