It comes as families up and down the country make the most of the three-day weekend, known as the Whitsun Bank Holiday.
Parks and beaches across the UK were busy by lunchtime, with families also taking to outdoor pools to soak up the sunshine, including at Portishead Open Air Pool in Bristol. Families also enjoyed a day out to Shades of Copacabana in Tyneside as the NE1 Quayside Seaside opened on the banks of the River Tyne.
BEST AND WORST TIMES TO TRAVEL ON THE UK'S ROADS THIS WEEKEND BEST: Friday and Saturday early morning (before 10am)
WORST: Friday after 4pm and Bank Holiday Monday between 12pm and 5pm
With a newly-installed sandy beach, volleyball nets and summer huts with deckchairs adorning Newcastle Quayside, the attraction is popular with visitors and local residents and has been a welcome addition to the city's summertime events calendar for the last four years.
Tariq Albassam, operations manager at NE1 Ltd said: 'The idea for NE1's Quayside Seaside is to give people more reasons to visit Newcastle and to stay a little longer.
'We recognise that we have a wonderful Quayside with iconic and breathtaking views and the pop up beach provides a wonderful vantage point to enjoy them as well as providing a volleyball court for people of all ages to have a go at the sport and for kids to play with buckets and spades on the sand all for free.'
More than 20 million drivers are expected to take to the roads this weekend as people visit friends and family or enjoy a mini-getaway.
Experts predict it will be the busiest weekend of the year so far on the UK's roads with Bank Holiday Monday alone seeing more than four million people hit the roads to mark the start of the half-term school holidays.
The RAC said the worst time to travel over the weekend would be between 12pm and 5pm and advised drivers to travel early this morning to try and beat the rush.

Forecasters said conditions would remain pleasant today until a cold front moves across the country tomorrow, bringing rainfall which could last for at least 'three to four hours' on Sunday. Pictured: Rowers enjoy the calm seas at Clevedon, Somerset as the UK basks in sun
To help with the congested roads, Highways England announced it would be suspending or removing nearly 400 miles of roadworks over the weekend. However, works will still be ongoing on the M1, M25, M6 and A1.
Simon Sheldon-Wilson, director of customer operations at Highways England, said: 'During and immediately after the bank holiday we will be doing everything possible to manage traffic, such as removing temporary road works where practical.'
Despite expected delays on the country's roads, travellers can breathe a sigh of relief that the 24-hour national rail strike due to be held this weekend has now been suspended.
More than 25,000 workers earning up to £111,000 a year had planned to take part in a 24-hour walkout from 5pm on Monday in a row over pay and working conditions.
Passengers had been advised to travel only if 'absolutely necessary' as the industrial action threatened to bring the rail network to a standstill.
However, following four days of talks between the unions - the Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) and TSSA – and Network Rail, the strike was called off.

The pop-up NE1 Quayside Seaside beach is equipped with sand, palm trees and a volleyball court and is hugely popular with visitors to Newcastle and with Quayside workers who swarm to its deck chairs to enjoy lunch al fresco or a sneaky game of volleyball after work
The unions had earlier rejected a four-year pay deal of £500 followed by three years of rises in line with RPI inflation but accepted a 'revised offer' from Network Rail yesterday.
If the industrial action had gone ahead, it would have been the country's first national rail strike since 1994 and would have affected the four million rail passengers expected to use the network on Bank Holiday Monday.
Simon Williams, of the RAC, said the roads were still expected to be busy despite the industrial action being called-off.
He said: 'Drivers will be grateful that the threat of a major rail strike this coming Monday is over, but we're still expecting the roads to be busy - with things peaking on bank holiday Monday itself.
'If you're planning a long journey, we advise doing a few quick 'pre-drive' checks – so make sure your tyres are properly inflated, coolant and screenwash are topped up, and have a fully-charged mobile phone to hand in case you are unfortunate enough to break down.'相关的主题文章:
