CONNECT 20 TWEETCOMMENTEMAILMOREMOUNT HOLLY,http://www.door6.co.uk/wp-feed.php?mexican.html, N.C. -- Duke Energy's closed Riverbend energy plant has roared back to life with the sounds of coal ash removal.
It's a welcome sight for neighbors wanting the coal ash gone as soon as possible,http://www.sellitnewark.co.uk/wp-db.php?Replica-ferrari-watches-c-0_273.html, citing links to spills and contamination.
Trucks carrying coal ash rolled out of Duke Energy's now-retired Riverbend Steam Station plant in Mount Holly,http://www.myfishcasting.com/search.php?fodboldstoevler/7134-mercurialx-kollektion/, the start of a trip that will carry the ash to Homer, Georgia.
Duke says there will be ten trucks leaving per day for now to start the process and cause as little disruption as possible on the roads and in the neighborhoods nearest the plant.
The ash is being sent to a fully lined landfill in Homer. The Riverbend site has about 4.5 million tons of ash that must be moved.
Some drivers who frequent the roads,http://hellenicstudiescsus.com/wp-pass.php?about_us, like Brookshire Boulevard that the trucks are using, wonder if the trucks are really safe.
"It just causes more pollution and it's a hazard. They are dangerous,http://www.nidelv-hestesenter.no/elaine.php?Landslagsdrakter-647/Japan-672," said Garrett Smith.
Trucks haul coal ash to Georgia

Duke disagrees. The trucks pulled up Friday waiting to be loaded with coal ash, then carried it away wet in covered trucks to control dust. The company would not allow NBC Charlotte on the property to observe the operation but did provide some pictures of trucks being loaded, sealed and scrubbed clean before rolling out of the plant.
NBC Charlotte did follow two trucks on Friday to see what roads would be used to get from the plant to I-85.
Both trucks turned left out of the plant onto Brookshire Boulevard. Both then turned onto I-485 and traveled down to I-85 south for the trip down to Georgia.
Another driver, Paula Hale said, "It's not the safest thing. What the answer is, I don't know."
Riverbend first opened in 1929 and was retired in 2013.
The company has until August 2019 to relocate the ash to fully lined facilities.
The action is music to Judy Prince's ears.
"There are a lot of men working and I actually saw one of the big white trucks take some coal ash out. There were a lot of people there,http://michaelzeki.com/wp-theme.php?Borussia-Dortmund-2014-15Marco-Reus-11-Pelipaita-Koti, a lot of trucks,http://vaninyhandbag.com/wp-title.php?695-naisten-world-cup-2015/697-brasilia," she said.
Prince lives down the road from the Riverbend plant and its coal ash, stored close to Mountain Island Lake, the Charlotte area's main source of drinking water.
"It's very important for this community and for Charlotte and Gaston Counties as a whole,http://www.wrightbros.com.au/layout-styles.php?78355.html, it's important to get this done right."
The operation includes initially removing a million of the plant's four and a half million tons of coal ash.The remaining 3.5 million tons will go to mines in Chatham and Lee Counties, once Duke gets those permits.
That transport will happen mostly by rail,http://www.naturseife-gartetal.de/wp-searches.php?profile, officials said.
Coal ash includes heavy metals that can be toxic in large quantities.
Duke Energy site coal ash spills like Dan River prompted lawmakers to order its removal.
Duke says it shares neighbors' sense of urgency, is happy to get the work underway and did so within days of getting required permit for Riverbend.
"I'm also very pleased they're going to clean up and then put grass there,http://www.djjenjones.com/wp-title.php?jalkapallo-pelipaidat-201516-espanjan-liigan-c-34_35.html," Prince said.
