Tim Twentyman takes a look at which NFC North rookies will make the biggest impact in 2015.The draft and the rookie minicamps are now over for the four teams in the NFC North. Most rookies for the Lions, Packers, Vikings and Bears are in the offseason program with the veterans now.
The Lions are certainly expecting a few of their rookies to make a big impact this season, and the same can probably be said for the Packers, Vikings and Bears.
So which rookie on each team is poised to have the biggest impact in 2015?
GREEN BAY
DB Damarious Randall (Photo: AP Images) Instant impact rookie: Damarious Randall, DB, first-round pick
Why: Randall was the best cover safety in the draft and the Packers are going to be able to use him in a lot of different ways. Don’t be surprised if you see him line up initially at cornerback in sub packages.
He’s got 4.41 speed, which will allow the Packers to explore a lot of different possibilities with him at both cornerback and safety. Randall tested extremely well at the combine in shuttle runs measuring change of direction and speed.
Quotable: "I don't know how that will work, but I'm looking at him as a corner today," general manager Ted Thompson told The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. "If next week we decided he's a safety, then it doesn't matter. He's still going to be on the field a lot of the time.
"He's got very good ball skills. He's got kind of a knack for catching the ball. He played center field in baseball, which I think is a marvelous trait to have as a defensive back. He's just one of those kind of guys that if you were choosing up a team he literally got picked first all the time."
DETROIT
Instant impact rookie: Ameer Abdullah, RB, second-round pick
Why: The Lions are dead set on running the football better in 2015 and Abdullah fits right into those plans. He’s the big-play threat the Lions need in their run game with his quick twitch and explosive burst.
He’s going to run the football, catch it out of the backfield and will also get a crack at winning the kickoff and punt return duties. That’s a big load for a rookie running back.
Quotable: “He is a very productive, consistent performer and versatile guy,” general manager Martin Mayhew said. “He ran for over 1,600 yards last year and averaged over 28 yards on kickoff returns.
“We are going to give him a look in the backfield but also returns as a kickoff and punt return guy. He did punt returns his first couple years in college. He will get a real good look in a lot of different areas for us.”
MINNESOTA
Instant impact rookie: Eric Kendricks, LB, second-round pick
Why: There are two things defensive coaches like Mike Zimmer like in linebackers -- a player with instincts and a guy who can be a true three-down player. That’s what the Vikings think they have in Kendricks.
He can play inside or outside and was probably the best cover linebacker available in the draft. He’ll play from Day 1.
Quotable: “I have been (impressed), he’s very, very instinctive,” head coach Mike Zimmer told the Minneapolis Star Tribune after the Vikings’ rookie minicamp. “He reminds me of some of the guys that I’ve had play for me in the past.
“He’s quick, he can accelerate and run. He does a good job in coverage. We’re excited to have him. Hopefully we can continue to upgrade at the linebacker spot and continue to get better up front defensively.”
CHICAGO
Instant impact rookie: Kevin White, WR, first-round pick
Why: White will be explosive in the Bears' offense at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds with 4.35-second 40-yard dash speed.
He will need to catch 46 passes this season to break the Bears’ rookie reception mark (45) set by Johnny Knox (2009) and Harlon Hill (1954). That seems likely to happen if he stays healthy.
Quotable: “He was outstanding,” offensive coordinator Adam Gase told the Chicago Tribune of White during Bears rookie minicamp. “He could tell you exactly what the checks were, what him and the quarterback, what page they were on. It was pretty impressive when he came in the building.
“We really like what he brought to the table, and we look for specific routes, and when we see one or two things, we know they can do the entire tree, so his speed, his body control, the way that he bursts off the ball, all those things we really liked.”相关的主题文章:
