PEARL -- For a game that featured five errors and 14 walks, who knew Friday night's Class 4A championship would end on a perfect play that couldn't have been scripted better if St. Stanislaus tried.
Greer Holston certainly couldn't have known in the sixth, when he was the third Rockachaw to score in the frame and fifth overall.
At that point, it looked like the wheels had fallen off for Houston as St. Stanislaus scored its final three runs on a walk, hit batsman and wild pitch.
But the Hilltoppers responded with two runs of their own in the top of the seventh leading up to the decisive play.
With a runner on second and SSC all of a sudden clinging to a two-run lead, Houston's Reid Carter laced a ball off Holston, who had moved over from shortstop for a one-out save.
Right fielder Adam Guillot tracked the ball off the wall, and relayed a throw to second baseman Noah Nicaud.
The senior spun and delivered a strike to third baseman Patrick McRaney, who tagged Carter just as he slid into the bag to secure the 5-4 victory.
"I caught it and just turned it loose," Nicaud said. "When I saw he was out I just took off for the mound."
When St. Stanislaus poured out of the home dugout and onto the field at Trustmark Park, dog piling on the mound, it didn't matter how the game was won. All that mattered was that the Rockachaws (29-5) had earned their first state championship since 2010.
"I thought it was a great way to end it with the three seniors," said Holston, who went 1-for-3 with a double and scored a team-high two runs. "Adam is a senior. Noah and then finish it off with P-Mac (Patrick McRaney).
" We had to win this. We knew that when it came down to two outs we needed to finish and in a miracle way, I guess, that's what happened."
St. Stanislaus worked into and out of trouble early in the game. Houston (28-11) loaded the bases in the first but SSC starter Jonathon Artigues got of the jam.
The Hilltoppers then stranded a runner at third base in the third inning.
At one point, Artigues, who had flu-like symptoms prior to leaving the Coast Friday morning, retired 11 of 12 batters he faced and despite the early struggles as a team he took a no hitter into the fifth inning.
"When I got on the bus this morning I wasn't feeling too good but I took some medicine and had to power through it," said Artigues, who picked up his 11th win on the season after allowing four runs in 6.2 innings.
The Hilltoppers also dodged a few bullets early. Sophomore right-hander Tanner Smith started for Houston and struggled with his command. Despite hitting 88 on the stadium's radar gun early on, the Ole Miss commit was wild and ended up walking six in 3.2 innings.
Nicaud's sacrifice fly in the third scored Holston to give SSC an early 1-0 lead. The Rockachaws added to their lead in the fourth on Chase Rhodes' standup triple, scoring Ryan Pitalo.
Guillot and Rhodes scored on a walk and hit batter in the sixth and then Holston scored what ended up being the game-winning run on a wild pitch.
"That's what we have tried to do all year, put a little pressure on them," SSC coach Mark Logan said. "Luckily we did, otherwise we might still be playing or be down."
Houston scored its first run in the fifth on an RBI-single by Garrison Howell.
Down to their final out, Howell hit a two-run double to set up the final unforgettable play.
"That was amazing," Artigues said. "I'm glad Noah came through with that throw. When the ball went up in the air there were no good thoughts but we got it done.
"It's a great feeling. I wouldn't trade it for anything."相关的主题文章:
