Ms. Mulligan (Oscar-nominated for An Education in 2009) is riveting and fresh as a daisy here as opposed to the Daisy for which she got brickbats in Baz Luhrmann s Gatsby (2013). Hardy gave Bathsheba such full symphonic treatment on the page that an actress is at her screenwriter s mercy and can only select certain tones and tunes to convey the role. Ms. Mulligan succeeds even better than Julie Christie, whom I loved in John Schlesinger s underrated 1967 version, co-starring the male powerhouse of Alan Bates, Peter Finch and Terence Stamp. Ms. Christie was all air and water (and sweetly blond). Ms. Mulligan is all earth and fire (and sultry-dark, as Hardy intended), assertive in farm business and the business of love. The play of her eyes is an invitation to the glance not the dance but she is capable of regretting her own caprice.相关的主题文章:
