By Mike PhillipsPittsburgh-The Mets had a really bad weekend in Pittsburgh. After dropping the first two games of their three game set with the , the Mets came into today s contest hoping to salvage the series finale. That didn t happen as the Pirates (21-22) battered (L, 3-5) and the Mets (24-21) 9-1 to complete a three game sweep.
|
The game started off with Niese and Pirates starter tossing up zeroes. The Pirates broke open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when Jordy Mercer doubled home to make it 1-0. The Mets tied the game the very next inning on an RBI single from . They had a chance for more when they loaded the bases with two out. John Mayberry Jr, however, struck out to end the inning.
The wheels came off for Niese in the bottom of the frame. After walking Jose Tabata to lead off the inning, Niese served up a two run homer (7) to to put the Pirates up 3-1. The Pirates tacked on another run thanks to an RBI single from Cervelli, which knocked Niese out of the game. Niese had another rough outing, giving up four runs on seven hits and four walks in just 4.2 innings of work. The Mets bullpen didn t help the cause as Erik Goeddel served up a three run homer (9) to to make it 7-1 in the sixth. The last two runs came at the expense of Sean Gilmartin, who worked two innings of mop up duty.
The Mets could do absolutely nothing against Liriano (W, 2-4), who dazzled them for six innings of work. Liriano gave up only one run on six hits in six innings of work, and struck out 12 Mets batters. The offensive effort was absolutely pathetic for the whole weekend, and today s lineup arguably looked like a Triple-A outfit due to injuries to Lucas Duda and Juan Lagares. In three games, the Mets scored four runs and struck out a whopping 36 times. That is unacceptable production if the Mets want to contend.
Player of the Game:
Today s Player of the Game Award goes to Pirates center fielder . McCutchen went 2 for 3 with a two run homer, two runs scored, and drew two walks. The homer put Pittsburgh up for good in the fifth inning.
