PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – While many people are enjoying picnics and barbecues this Memorial Day, the holiday is meant to remember those who gave their lives for this country.
And several events in our area Sunday honored the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice.
The bell tolled once from the deck of the USS Requin each time veterans read the names of the 52 submarines and their crews that made the ultimate sacrifice during World War II.
Flower petals were cast on the water in memory of each submarine now on eternal patrol.
Meanwhile, veterans were saluted at United Methodist Church in Sewickley during a special service to show appreciation for those who served their country.
A slide show presentation showed men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country. Paul Collier was a marine pilot from 1953 to 1962. He hopes this generation will never forget.
“I want them to remember the people who served our country and allowed us to be free like we are and I honor all those, and I hope those young people don’t have to go to war,” said Collier.
Active duty Master Sgt. Pete Hiles with the Pennsylvania National served in Iraq.
“Over 1 million people have died in this country, giving their lives so those of us can live the way we do,” said Hiles.
WWII vehicles were part of a salute to WWII veterans during the annual Carnegie Memorial Day Parade.
“I had brothers in the service, it really means a lot to me,” said Norma Eringer.
“A day like today means so much to the people who gave their lives for us, who sacrificed for it,” said Congressman Tim Murphy. “I know we think about picnics and big sales and things like that, but it is also a day we say thank you.”
