England captain Alastair Cook will resume on the fifth and final day of the First Test against New Zealand looking to add to the 152 he reached at the close of play on Sunday evening.
The hosts batted superbly on the fourth day to save a match that looked only to be heading one way after the Kiwis took two early wickets at the start of the second innings.
But Cook and Co managed to build a lead of 295 as they closed day four on 429-6 to boost their chances of winning this first Test.
Earlier in the day Ben Stokes hit the fastest Test century ever at Lord's off just 85 balls before eventually perishing for 101, caught at slip by Ross Taylor off the bowling of Mark Craig.
Stokes smashed New Zealand seamer Tim Southee for three sixes as he blasted England into a healthy lead.
Joe Root provided a moment of comedy as Stokes left the field to rapturous applause. The Yorkshireman stood and saluted, Marlon Samuels-style, from the England balcony.
Root himself had batted wonderfully on the way to 84 before pulling a short delivery straight down the throat of Southee at long leg.
This first Investec Test is so delicately balanced that all outcomes - an England win, a New Zealand victory or a draw - are still possible.
It promises to be a compelling final day on this bank holiday Monday with Lord's expected to be packed full.
