LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Six new exhibits that showcase sea jellies is coming to an aquarium in Long Beach.
On Thursday, the Aquarium of the Pacific gave a behind-the-scenes look into the new exhibits.
We allow guests the opportunity to touch some of our sea jellies, explained Sea Jellies Expert Josh Wagner. This shows that not all of them are as deadly as you think jellies are.
Guests will have the opportunity to touch Moon Jellies at the aquarium.
The very best place to touch the sea jellies is right on the top of the bell, which is on the top of their head, Wagner added. Use two fingers, nice and gentle.
Wagner explained jellies have no heart, brain, or eyes, however, they have existed since before the time of dinosaurs.
Some species can indicate if ocean water is clean, others can help to indicate pollution, and some even possess a potent sting.
Overall, they are delicate creatures made up of 95 percent water.
What s so cool about sea jellies is that they are so simple that it makes them incredibly complex, explained Wagner.
Officials explained the Aquarium of the Pacific, which is a non-profit organization, intends to further ocean education and conservation through the new jellies exhibits.
The new exhibits will open to the public on Friday.
