Matthews caught 41 passes for 448 yards and two touchdowns last season and made five starts but is at serious risk of not making the team. Heading into the 2014 NFL season, Matthews has been expected to compete for the Dolphins’ open slot receiver position with Brandon Gibson and rookie Jarvis Landry. Matthews held down the fort in the slot last season after Gibson went down with injury and finished the season with 41 receptions for 448 yards and two touchdowns.
In a highly competitive situation, Matthews has missed some key team meetings, causing his focus to be questioned. With so much talent at the receiver position in Miami, giving anything but his very best could come back to haunt him before the summer is over.
The Dolphins selected Matthews in the seventh round of the 2012 NFL Draft out of Nevada. He made great strides last season and improved dramatically over his rookie campaign,With the Lester Situation Clo, during which he recorded just 11 receptions in eight games.
