Veteran production exec Scott Bernstein is leaving to become an independent on a trio of studio projects.
Bernstein will be working as a producer on the Universal movies Mama 2, 2 and Straight Outta Compton. He joined the studio in 2004 and has been exec VP of production for the studio since late 2009.
Bernstein oversaw production on Ride Along, starring Ice Cube and , which  became the highest-grossing film ever released in January at $134 million and won the box office for three weeks in a row.
He also oversaw production on Guillermo del Toro’s Mama, which grossed more than $147 million worldwide.
Bernstein also worked on Melissa McCarthy’s Identity Thief, The Break-Up, Role Models and Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. He s been developing a reboot of Battlestar Galactica attached JJ Abrams and Bad Robot to the reboot of Earthquake attached  Matt Reeves to direct the reimagining of They Live and worked with Michael Bay and Platinum Dunes on the reboot of The Birds.
Bernstein previously worked as a production exec at Revolution Studios and at Lionsgate.
