Following my previous write up on , it s time to look at the opposition. The Chargers first day of camp begins Thursday,
Cheap True Religion Jeans, July 24 and runs until August 12. The practices are open to the .
Here are three players, I believe, are ‘overrated’ heading into training camp:
1. (OLB):
A 2009 first-round draft pick by former general manager A.J. Smith. Since being drafted by the Chargers, English has appeared in only 52 games the last five seasons, managing 11 sacks and 80 tackles. Of those 52 appearances, he s only started nine times.
He s had every opportunity to succeed, but just can t stay healthy.
In 2010,
WILMINGTON, N.C.- Former Irmo, a foot fracture halted his second and third season, missing 19 games. In 2012, he was out Week 11 with a calf injury. And in 2013, he started five games with 2.5 sacks before landing on injured reserve in November with a biceps injury.
This offseason, English was reportedly a free agent in March. However, he remains under contract for one more year. According to Mike Florio from :
A Chargers source advises PFT (ProFootballTalk) that English did not reach the playing-time percentage neccessary to void the final year of his original six-year deal.
English is scheduled to earn $1.54 million in base salary in 2014. Even though English hasn t lived up to expectations, he will add depth to the pass rusher core that includes: Melvin Ingram, Dwight Freeney, Thomas Keiser, Jarret Johnson, Tourek Williams and Reggie Walker.
2. (G):
Clary is entering his ninth season with the Chargers. He is expected to make $4.5 million in the final year of his contract. His base salary is the eighth-highest among guards in the league, and fourth-highest on the team after , and .
With that being said, Clary s price tag is simply overpaid.
Clary has performed to a greater degree switching from tackle to guard, which helped improve the offensive line last year, but it doesn t amount to $4.5 million. According to ProFootballFocus, Clary was ranked 72nd-best offensive guard in the league (out of 81) last year.
A question mark for Clary this year will be his durability. He had offseason surgeries on his shoulder and hip, missing OTA s and minicamp. It s unclear if he ll be ready at the start of training camp.
3. (RB):
It s tough to put Mathews on this list because he had a stellar year. He ran for a career-high 1,255 yards with 6 touchdowns, helping the Chargers rank 13th overall in rushing yards (a best since 2007). He also had six games where he rushed over 100 yards, and played in his first 16 regular-season games.
But the previous three seasons from 2010-2012 were not as stellar.
Plagued with injuries, and recording almost as many fumbles to touchdowns (11 fumbles, 14 TD s), Mathews was already considered a bust by many.
The 6-foot,
Singapore censors US comic bo, 220-pound running back is entering his fifth and final season with the team. Mathews has spent time training during the offseason and it s expected he ll continue to be the starting back.
Michael Gehlken from reported that Mathews has found some rhythm with age and hopes to step it up this year,

I didn t get to contribute to the real games when they count, Mathews said. That s what my expectation is this year. I ve got to do more so I can be there with my guys to help them out as much as I can when we get into that position again.
