A North Wales Police spokesman said: 'We were called to an incident on Wrexham Street at around 11pm.
'A man in his 50s had been assaulted and he received medical attention.'
A statement released by the Ex-Servicemen's Club on its Facebook page praised Mr Williams for the time he had devoted to the organisation.
The club described him as 'a person who would help anyone out if they were stuck and who has given a lot of his free time to the club in the past'.
'The coward who did this should be driven out of Mold. We don't need people who do this in Mold.'

Outraged Facebook users took to the site to condemn the attack, describing it as disgraceful,Ray Ban Wiki, sick, evil, disgusting and dreadful.
Rhian Howells wrote: 'Get better soon, Charlie - nicest guy you could meet. How anyone could do this is beyond me. It's sick.'
A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesman said: 'We responded with a rapid response vehicle and an emergency ambulance.
'A male in his 50s was taken to Wrexham Maelor Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.'
A spokesman for North Wales Police said a man had now been arrested in connection with the attack and released on police bail pending further enquiries.
