Panamanian cousins Abdull Dominguez and Ricardo Giliam (aka Raka Dun and Raka Rich) celebrated their twin heritages with help from Chicano rapper Big Dan, who added a few shout-outs to Pancho Villa and the United Farm Workers. Call it another side of American colonialism, one with a throbbing beat.
Raka Rich was born in Northern California and moved to Panama City when he was 12; Raka Dun was raised in the Panamanian barrio Nuevo Veranillo, one of ten kids, and immigrated to the East Bay as a teenager,http://www.katalogportali.com/phpinfo.php?Nike-Tiempo, where he met his cousin at a family event and they began to share their love of hip-hop,http://rentasgastronomicas.com/wp-feed.php?chaquetas-c-103.html, dancehall and reggaeton music. They took their band name from a Panamanian slang term for someone from the ghetto (“Rakataka”); the cousins were being politicized as the experience of being Afro-Latino in white America began to inform their outlook. Their latest album, the all-Spanish El Negrito Dun Dun Ricardo, features a couple songs expressly about immigration issues (“Mi Pais,” “Chica de Mi Corazon”).
The Music:
The duo has garnered a large following by getting their unique sound in front of new audiences,http://verdensbedstenogensinde.dk/fantversion.php?AC-Milan, first on Snoop Dogg’s 2010 Smoke Out Festival (which also featured Manu Chao and Erykah Badu); this year’s Coachella festival (two different dates) and this summer’s ). Not that the cousins need Debbie Harry to get their groove. Their 2011 album was number one on iTunes in 2011; free downloads like their cover of crossover with older listeners; and their clothing line, lets fans show off their ‘raka’ pride. The unaccustomed to seeing their world represented in school. As Dun said of getting their music in front of a Latino audience, “What we preach is for you to be proud of who you are.”
