Several local organizations and businesses in Mason County will host a community resource fair to provide support for those affected by the planned closures of three Shelton-area mills.The fair is set for 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday (May 27) at the MTA Transit-Community Center at 601 Franklin St., Shelton.Those representing utility companies, financial institutions, mortgage services, employment assistance agencies and other community resources will be on hand to help and answer questions, according to a news release from the Shelton-Mason County Chamber of CommerceFor more information about the fair, contact Shelton-Mason County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Heidi McCutcheon at 360-426-2021 or

Lumber Company LLC and Olympia Panel Products of Shelton recently announced mill closures following asset sales to other companies. Both decisions affect more than 500 workers. Simpson will close its landmark mill in downtown Shelton and one in Dayton after it sold them to Sierra Pacific Industries of Northern California.Sierra plans to build a new mill, but it s not expected to become operational until 2017.Olympia Panel Products is expected to close its Shelton mill next year after the assets were sold to Springfield, Oregon-based Swanson Group Manufacturing LLC.
