Alex Salmond admits he would work with the Tories to keep Britain in the EU 9 years 7 months ago #143540

Mr Salmond said he would share a platform with the Chancellor George Osborne (pictured at the CBI conference on Wednesday)

The SNP attacked Labour fo working with the Tories to save the Union after former Scottish Labour Party Leader Johann Lamont, (left) former Chancellor Alistair Darling, (second left) Scottish Conservative Party Leader Ruth Davidson (second right) and Scottish Liberal Democrat Leader Willie Rennie, (right) joined forces
Despite failing in his bid to break up Britain, losing his referendum by 400,000 votes, Mr Salmond claimed he was in a position to offer advice to the Conservatives ahead of the EU referendum.
He cautioned against an ‘Establishment carve-up’ and a negative campaign, even though it was fears over the economy that motivated many No voters to save the Union.
‘You certainly shouldn’t fool about with the question,’ he added.
‘The question should be straightforward and honest. The Yes side is important; if you’re wanting to embrace a positive vision of staying in Europe, you want to be Yes.’
Mr Cameron has promised a referendum by 2017, but there are suggestions it could be held sooner – possibly on the same date as the Scottish parliament and London mayoral elections next May.
Mr Salmond, who is now both an MSP and MP following this month’s General Election, said: ‘If you’re having it, you should have it sooner rather than later – as soon as it can be democratically and properly arranged.
‘I don’t agree with confusing one election or referendum with another. If you think this is important, then it’s important enough to stand on its own.
‘The way to get a turnout is not to latch your referendum on to something else. The way to get a turnout is to make your message inspiring and positive, so that people want to vote for it.’
Mr Osborne is expected to lead the ‘in’ campaign but Mr Salmond boasted: ‘I’m one of the more popular politicians in the country. I mean I just say that because it’s true. Or Nicola Sturgeon, who’s the most outstanding popular politician in the country at the present moment.
‘Even Nicola Sturgeon, with all her appeal and all her popularity, and all her positive opinion poll ratings, is still a politician. You mustn’t, absolutely mustn’t make this campaign about politicians.
‘Incidentally, if I could just say this sincerely to George Osborne: Please, not the figurehead in Scotland, not if you want a Yes vote.’
An SNP spokesman said: ‘Alex’s point was that a pro-European campaign shouldn’t be about politics, and George Osborne would be a terrible figurehead in Scotland.’相关的主题文章:
