COMMENTEMAILMOREWilmington police have arrested a city resident, charging him with murder in the April 28 shooting death of mother-of-two Arteise Brown.
Mateo Pinkston, 25, of Wilmington, has been charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, four counts of reckless endangering, possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony and deadly weapon possession by a person prohibited, Sgt. Andrea Janvier said.
Pinkston is being held at Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, lacking $1.5 million cash bail.
Police did not disclose what past offense left Pinkston prohibited from gun possession.
Brown, who left two young sons, and another woman were shot shortly after 8 p.m. in the 600 block of W. Sixth St., as she visited with relatives about three blocks from her home in the 700 block of W. Fourth St.
Brown was shot in the lower back and died shortly after arrival at Christiana Hospital, Janvier said.
She was the 11th person killed by gunfire in the city this year – and the first female among those homicide victims.
The other victim, a 19-year-old woman, was shot in the upper part of her left leg, she said. She was treated at Christiana Hospital and later released.
Investigation developed Pinkston as the suspect, Janvier said, and the state Department of Justice authorized his arrest on Wednesday.
He was apprehended on the same day in the area of Seventh and N. Washington streets by members of the city police department's Criminal Investigation Division Homicide Unit, she said.
