True music fans know that behind every great touring musician, there s a great road crew. And there s none better than Ben Dorcy, Willie Nelson s longtime friend and roadie who turned 90 years old this week, making him the original - and oldest living roadie.
Now, after spending 64 years on the road, Willie s grand-nephew Trevor and daughter Amy have directed a film chronicling Dorcy s remarkable story. King of the Roadies profiles the man who has dedicated pretty much his entire life to some of country music s greatest artists. Country singer and humorist, Kinky Friedman once said you could tell if a musician was any good if they had worked with Ben Dorcy, who was John Wayne s personal valet, Johnny Cash s chauffeur and also worked for Patsy Cline, Elvis Presley, Kris Kristofferson, and Merle Haggard.
The Texas native who skated in the Ice Capades before finding his role in the music world - is affectionately referred to as Lovey by Willie and the Nelson family, whose side he s been faithfully by since the 1960s.
The film s co-director Amy Nelson said to Rolling Stone Country: Ben took care of all of us and made us feel comfortable throughout an endless series of hectic situations. He has no living relatives, yet he is the patriarch of a family of artists, and fellow roadies who love him dearly. Despite all odds, he shows up to work on tour after tour after tour. Ben was a part of my family before I was.
Willie says he s proud of the movie and glad his old buddy is finally getting the recognition he deserves. King of The Roadies is 10 years in the making and there s a taking place until June 20th to fund the completion of the movie, which the filmmakers hope to premiere and present next year.
