And it means for the first time patients living outside major cities will get the chance to take part in clinical trials.Monash University s Dr Andrew Wei will help oversee the first trial funded under the new scheme.He hopes to get 60 patients to trial a new drug called an HSP90 inhibitor as part of a UK trial involving 300 patients.The medication blocks a protein crucial to cancer cell survival and support and cancer cells die off. It s been very promising in lung cancer but it is a small drug company developing it and they are pouring all their money into lung cancer and there is no money for leukaemia, he said.Dr Wei hopes to use the Leukaemia Foundation funding to trial the drug on leukaemia patients.Patients taking part in the trial have to be elderly, over the age of 60 and not fit for intensive chemotherapy.Leukaemia Foundation Queensland president Bill Petch said the national program of funding clinical trials was the result of asking the organisations stakeholders what they wanted money spent on as part of its 40th anniversary.
