Caroline Buchanan
She's a fitness machine with washboard abs, but a behind-the-scenes documentary on Canberra's world BMX champion Caroline Buchanan shows she's not quite clued-up on washing her clothes. One scene in the laundry proves Buchanan is far more comfortable spinning her pedals than operating the spin-cycle. What's the technical way of doing it? Do you put the shampoo stuff [detergent] in first or later? I'm made to ride a bike, not do washing, Buchanan laughs. The doco tracks Buchanan's progress from her base in California to competitions all around the world, as well as capturing her adrenaline-junkie lifestyle. Buchanan is training in California as she aims to add to her world title tally this year before chasing Olympic redemption in Rio in 20126. Buchanan said her botched London Olympics campaign in 2012 made her realise she needed to tap into a different kind of strength. Buchanan finished first in the seeding run for the Olympic final in 2012 but, after a disastrous start, finished fifth behind Columbia's Mariana Pajon in the mad scramble for a medal. Buchanan has credited the setback for fuelling her ascent in the sport. That was one of the best things that ever happened to me, making that mistake in the final second [before the race started], Buchanan told Fairfax Media Daniel Lane. I went on to win two world titles the following year; last year I won the whole World Cup series, and this year I started the season off really well by winning another World Cup [event]. The level I'm riding at, the maturity, is so much greater than when I was in London. I owe so much to that mistake, because If didn't make it I might not have enjoyed the success I have. London made me dig deep. You can check out Buchanan's documentary at:
Canberra's climbers scale new heights Canberra is king of the mountain in Australia when it comes to the sport of indoor rock climbing - problem is, it's not officially recognised in Australia as a sport. Three Canberra climbers will compete in this year's international series of five world cup events, beginning next weekend in Canada. Emma Horan, Daniel Fisher and Kumari Barry have all qualified to compete in the open category, while two more Canberra climbers - Oliver MacGibbon and Roslyn Blake - will represent Australia at the junior world championships in Italy in August. The International Federation of Sport Climbing has 83 member federations across five continents, but Australia isn't officially one of them because there's not enough climbers to qualify. Horan, 22, has been climbing for 14 years and also coaches MacGibbon and Blake. We've got a very strong climbing culture here in Canberra, we make up about a quarter of the Australian team, Horan said. It's still a very young sport in Australia, so there's not enough members to have official recognition as a sport. That makes it hard with funding. I'm currently studying, training, working and doing an internship trying to get enough money to do this. There is a trend towards non-traditional lifestyle sports in Australia, which require less structured training and competition times. Horan hopes rock climbing can take advantage. The sport involves three categories - speed, lead and bouldering - and Horan said it combined physical and mental strength. In fact, the climbs are known in the sport as problems , with competitors kept in isolation so they cannot watch how their rivals scale the walls. We do a lot of physical training, like hanging off ledges with weights attached to us. But it also takes a lot of mental capacity, figuring out the body positions.
