An internal investigation has determined that a suspicious device found at Shaler Area High School, prompting evacuations Wednesday, had been tampered with by two adults from an outside organization, according to a letter posted to the Shaler Area School District website.
The device, which was described as a small device 3 inches in diameter that had duct tape on it, was initially discovered Sunday in the auditorium.

According to the district’s letter, the adults found the device and then tampered with it before it was handed over to a janitor. The device was not determined to be a threat and was secured in a locked location.
The auditorium was being used by an outside organization Sunday.
On Monday night, the janitor brought the device to the high school security office during an evening shift, the letter stated. However, school was not in session Tuesday and security was off, so administration was not notified until Wednesday morning.
“We are very disappointed that the information was not brought to our attention or the attention of local law enforcement agencies sooner,” the letter stated. “The safety of our staff and students is one of our top priorities, and we are reviewing our protocol to find the cause of the delay and to ensure that this will not happen again.”
Law enforcement was immediately contacted, as per district policy, once administrators were made aware of the incident Wednesday, according to the district’s letter. Students and staff were evacuated and buses were called for an early dismissal.
“District administration, local law enforcement and police K-9 units conducted a thorough protective sweep of the building and property, and investigators found the campus to be safe and secure to resume all after-school activities that evening,” the letter stated.
A police investigation into the incident is ongoing.
