It is believed that foodborne and waterborne diseases kill an estimated two million people annually including children, particularly in developing countries.
According to Oladimeji Agbolade, Head, Public Affairs,

The thrust of discussion at the forum was basically on the need for collaboration and communication among the various groups to ensure food safety in Nigeria. It was agreed that government and its various agencies, including public health, agriculture, education/research institutions and trade, professionals, food industry and civil society had a huge responsibility to ensure food were treated appropriately at various levels of processing.
Agbolade explained further that a large proportion of foodborne disease incidents were caused by foods improperly prepared or mishandled at home,

Not all food handlers and consumers understand the roles they must play, such as adopting basic hygienic practices when buying, selling and preparing food to protect their health and that of the wider community , he said.

Dr. Kofo Odeyemi, who explained that food processing involved taking the raw material through processes such as raw food/produce handling, cleaning, mixing, heat exchange, separation, concentration, drying, packaging and storing finished products,

She said therefore that to address such issues, there was an urgent need for the provision of potable and good water supply, solid and liquid waste disposal methods at factory, good physical and chemical cleaning procedures of equipment, health education of food handlers on personal hygiene.
Attention must also be paid to food transport, storage and preservation. Contamination may be from the transport equipment, poor temperature,
