In a remote foothill canyon,http://www.vincinibottier.com/wp-xml.php?camiseta-del-barcelona-15-bartra-2014-lejos-p-4095.html, fresh water from a spring cascades over the brink and down 40 feet over black rock to a small plunge pool. It’s called Upper Falls, and though just a 1-mile walk from the trailhead at Uvas Canyon County Park, we had it to ourselves last week.
It’s like many of the other 275 recreation sites in the greater Bay Area. Whether you’ve looked lately or not, they are out there waiting for you.
If you don’t yet have reservations for an out-of-town trip over Memorial Day weekend, day trips to your favorite park can provide a low-cost solution with great rewards.
I have ranked each of the Bay Area’s recreation destinations on a scale of 1-100 — a top score of 10 points in each of 10 categories, including scenic beauty, views, access, hiking, biking, fishing, camping, boating, wildlife and payoff. The rankings were further broken down to create localized top 10 lists.
Bay Area rankings
San Francisco
Best: Presidio — On every visit, you can create a place that feels all your own, yet with a world-class touch. One of my favorite spots is a picnic site a quarter-mile uphill from Fort Point; it’s nestled in a cypress forest on the edge of a bluff for postcard views of the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco Bay. There are many other spots for heart-stopping views, great hikes (including with your dog), bicycle cruises and picnics, plus a group campground. Many are attracted to the historical monuments. Info: , (415) 561-4323,
Top 10: 1. Presidio; 2. Crissy Field,http://www.stationhorse.com.au/rdf.php?security.html; 3. Marina Green,http://www.nativeprince.com/vars.php?koti-jalkapallopaidats-k%25C3%25B6%25C3%25B6penhamina-20142015-halvat-p-509.html; 4. Fisherman’s Wharf; 5. South Beach; 6. San Francisco Bay; 7. Lands End/Sutro Baths ruins; 8. Alcatraz; 9. Ocean Beach; 10. Fort Point.
North Bay
Best: Point Reyes National Seashore — Point Reyes casts an aura that can touch every visitor. It’s a big place (71,000 acres) with many stellar destinations: the Point Reyes Lighthouse, Pierce Point Ranch with its elk, the Chimney Rock Headlands, Sky Trail and Inverness Ridge, Limantour Beach, Alamere Falls and the best series of coastal wilderness campsites on the Pacific Coast. But what you’ll remember is how it gets inside you and realigns your senses. Info: Point Reyes National Seashore, (415) 464-5100,
Top 10: 1. Point Reyes National Seashore; 2. Tomales Bay; 3. Angel Island State Park,http://www.ausblow.com.au/rss.php?273100.html; 4. Marin Headlands; 5,http://auramodels.co.uk/wp-rdf.php?breitling-chronomat-steel-watch. Mount Tamalpais State Park; 6. China Camp State Park; 7,http://www.nidelv-hestesenter.no/sararidetid.php?adidas-fotballdrakt-fc-chelsea-fernando-torres-9-langermet-3rd-bortedrakt-2014-2015-v-1034.html. San Pablo Bay; 8. Napa-Sonoma Marsh Wildlife Area; 9. State Park; 10. Lagunitas/Bon Tempe lakes.
East Bay
Best: Del Valle Regional Park — It’s the Bay Area’s only park that has it all: camping, power boating, swimming and fishing. A great, easy bike trail runs along the east side of the lake for pretty views. The park spans 5,000 acres, and the adjacent Ohlone Wilderness offers great hiking. Info: Del Valle Regional Park, (888) 327-2757, option 3, ext. 4524;
Top 10: 1,http://www.seduberry.com/wp-diff.php?everton-fc-26. Del Valle Regional Park; 2. Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta,http://www.bluescamp.no/fantversion.php?barn-fotball-troye-sett%3Fsort%3Dp.model%26order%3DDESC; 3. Sunol Regional Wilderness; 4. Point Pinole Regional Park; 5. Los Vaqueros Reservoir; 6. Lake Chabot Regional Park; 7. Mount Diablo State Park; 8. Grizzly Island Wildlife Area; 9. San Pablo Reservoir; 10. Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge.
Peninsula
Best: Pillar Point Harbor/Headlands — If you can just beat the traffic. The harbor provides low-cost kayak rentals, a boat ramp, the trailhead for the Coastal Trail and fishing trips for rockfish, salmon or whale watching. Just beneath Pillar Point Head, you’ll find a small parking lot and trailhead with access to a short walk to the foot of the Princeton jetty, where you turn right to reach an extended beach and beyond to a point with hidden tidepools. Info: Pillar Point Harbor weather, (650) 726-6070, ext. 2; San Mateo County Parks, parks.smcgov.org.
Top 10: 1. Pillar Point Harbor/Headlands; 2. Butano State Park; 3,http://onestopkidspartyshop.com.au/fantversion.php?shooting.aspx. Half Moon Bay State Beach; 4. Portola Redwoods State Park; 5. Año Nuevo State Park; 6. Palo Alto Baylands; 7. San Pedro Valley County Park; 8. Purisima Creek Redwoods Open Space Preserve; 9. Long Ridge Open Space Preserve; 10. Windy Hill Open Space Preserve.
South Bay/Santa Cruz
Best: Big Basin Redwoods State Park — All you have to do is drive in and walk the easy Redwood Loop; the trees are so old that it can feel like a trip to immortality. But it gets better: The park has the most diverse camping around, with drive-in sites, walk-in sites, remote hike-in sites and tent cabins. It’s the best redwood park for hiking, and the three waterfalls in Berry Creek Canyon are first class. Info: Big Basin Redwoods State Park, (831) 338-8860; Little Basin, (831) 338-3314,http://www.faz-transports.com/wp-title.php?textile-adulte/2837-maillot-domicile-chelsea-fc-20132014.html,

Coyote Lake-Harvey Bear Ranch; 3. State Park; 4. coast outpost with access to Big Basin; 5. Wilder Ranch State Park; 6. Loch Lomond Recreational Area (closed for drought); 7. Grant County Park; 8. Castle Rock State Park; 9. Uvas Canyon County Park; 10. Calero Reservoir.
