Renan Barao shot his mouth off on Saturday at probably the worst time.
Barao, who normally says next-to-nothing during interviews, had plenty of harsh words for UFC bantamweight champion T.J. Dillashaw for some inexplicable reason.
Dillashaw was professional and made weight and was ready to face Barao on Saturday in a rematch for the bantamweight title at the Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento, Calif., in the main event of UFC 177.
Barao passed out while in a tub in his hotel room while trying to cut weight and was pulled from the title shot and replaced by Joe Soto.
This would have been the perfect time for Barao to keep his mouth shut, but in comments released by the UFC, he instead went on full bore attack against the man who defeated him for the belt at UFC 173 in May in Las Vegas.
"I trained harder than ever for this fight," Barao said. "I wanted to make T.J. swallow his words from everything he's been saying. I used the same methods for getting ready for this fight as I have for my last 35 fights. I didn't think there was any problem. I just got up too quickly, fainted and hit my head. I want to come back and tear T.J.'s head off."
UFC president Dana White, unhappy with Barao for missing weight, said Barao won't get an immediate title shot upon his return.
It might also behoove Barao to think before he speaks. He was probably responding to Dillashaw's comment at the weigh-in, when Dillashaw said he felt Barao was afraid.
But given how Barao let Dillashaw down and cost him money -- Undoubtedly, the show will wind up with fewer pay-per-view sales than it would have had had Dillashaw-Barao II been the main event -- he should have just taken the comments from Dillashaw in stride and kept his mouth shut.
Now, he looks like an arrogant, out-of-touch, pampered athlete who wants to blame others for his issues.
