Outdoor kitchen, spacious public rooms make San Rafael estate an entertainer’s paradise
Kits of pre-fashioned materials are more synonymous with furniture than luxury homes. But San Rafael’s 27 Red Rock Way started with those exact humble beginnings before being transformed into an entertainer’s paradise with more than 8,000 square feet of living space, dramatic views and a backyard with an outdoor kitchen, three-lane pool and a spa.
“We’ve hosted school fundraisers and had a couple hundred people over on multiple occasions,” said , whose family has owned the home since its 1978 construction.
Leswing’s mother purchased the 4-acre estate, and two hexagonal structures designed by an Oakland company were erected on the property in the 1970s. Leswing and his wife, , then purchased the property in the 1990s and set out making it their own.
One of the biggest transformations was logical, yet challenging. The couple needed to connect the two spaces to create a massive home with individual wings. Fusing the home is the garden room, a space with soaring ceilings, massive windows and built-in speakers. It looks directly out at the luxurious backyard and has been a popular gathering spot since its inception, Leswing said.
The six-bedroom home offers spaces for both formal and casual gatherings. Chandeliers and natural light illuminate the formal dining room — a space capable of seating 24 — and the grand living room can double as a concert space with room for 100.
The space was especially helpful when Leung served on the board of directors for Saint Mark’s School and the couple routinely hosted fundraisers, he said.
“It’s an ideal home for entertaining and family living,” Leswing said.
But even entertainers need time for themselves. To meet that requirement, the home includes a serene master suite with clerestory windows, a fireplace and walk-in closets. The spa bathroom includes a soaking tub, glass shower and marble details. Like many other rooms in the sprawling home, the master suite includes a radial ceiling, hinting at the home’s geometric configuration.
Completing the property is a spacious backyard with 20-yard swimming pool, cabana with outdoor kitchen and a separate sport court. Besides multiple patios, the backyard also includes terraced planting beds and multiple patios.
Leswing and his wife have cherished the property for decades, he said, and are selling only because the space is simply too big for them now that they are empty nesters.
