WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Wake Forest will start freshman John Wolford at quarterback for the season opener at Louisiana-Monroe. In a release from the school Monday, new coach Dave Clawson said Wolford has "executed the offense at the highest level" and "gives us the best opportunity" to win games. Wolford will be the first true freshman quarterback to start a season opener for the Demon Deacons since September 1974. The 6-foot-1, 205-pound Wolford enrolled in school in late May. The Jacksonville, Florida native threw for 3,317 yards and 38 touchdowns with seven interceptions last year as a high school senior. He is replacing four-year starter Tanner Price. Clawson says the team needs to give Wolford plenty of practice reps to get him ready for the Aug. 28 opener.
