New plant looking at Glanbrook business park
An unidentified company is close to signing a deal to build a 150,000 square foot plant at the Glanbrook industrial park to supply the massive new Maple Leaf Foods meat processing factory.
Such investments are usually closely guarded secrets until deals are signed, but Mayor Bob Bratina let this one slip in a recent letter to Ontario Agriculture Minister Ted McMeekin in which the mayor lobbied for a provincial grant to Maple Leaf.
In his letter, included in the agenda package for Wednesday city council meeting, Bratina urges McMeekin to help Maple Leaf get funding for its new Hamilton plant under the provincial Rural Economic Development program.
Bratina argues the grant make a significant difference to Maple Leaf new $400 million meat processing plant and go a long way to securing Hamilton and area jobs for years to come.
He then adds Economic Development staff is already aware of another 150,

The revelation caught economic development director Neil Everson by surprise.
didn anticipate this being in the public sphere now, he said in an interview. now, there nothing concrete, but it our understanding this is a possibility.
Everson said he couldn identify the potential investor until a deal is signed,

He added no land in the Red Hill Industrial Park has been sold, no building permits have been applied for or site plans submitted to the city. The project would mean new jobs for the city, but Everson wouldn say how many.
I can say is we have a very good sense the plant will be located there and if it constructed,

The potential new investment, if it happens, will make a reality of city hopes the Maple Leaf Canada Bread facilities will be the hubs of a food processing node for Hamilton. The area will also be a boost to a years long effort to diversify the city economy.
getting a lot of inquiries and leads for this park now that Maple Leaf has been announced, Everson said. in the days of the region, we talked about trying to develop a food and beverage park in this location, and now that we getting this kind of development,

The new Hamilton plants are part of a major restructuring of Maple Leaf foods as the company tries to compete with American firms tearing off larger chunks of the domestic market. That effort includes shuttering six smaller meat processing plants and three smaller bakeries.
Bratina effort to get provincial funding for the Maple Leaf plant was unsuccessful the fund for such grants is drained for the current fiscal year.
McMeekin spokesman Mark Cripps said $27 million was handed out under the Rural Economic Development program for the current fiscal year and another 43 applications totalling $35 million remain in the queue for next year if the program is funded.
The program funds projects that support Ontario food processing sector or that remove barriers to economic development in rural areas, contribute to community development or help in skills training efforts.
