After LHS put three runs on the board in the first inning, behind Jolona Shield’s double and Brook Sumonja’s triple, the floodgates opened in the second. Grammer’s shot just inside the left-field foul pole capped a seven-run inning and put the Lancers in a 10-0 hole.

No frustrations existed for the Lions on this afternoon. They ripped 17 hits, six for extra bases, and all nine LHS batters had at least one hit.
A senior, Shield went 3-for-3 and drove a runner or two home each time she put the ball in play, on her way to four RBIs.

Senior Morgan Byrn smacked two-run doubles in both the third and fourth innings, including the game-clincher, and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs. Junior Sumonja, Grammer, freshman Zoe Brewer and senior Kenzie Garvin all finished with two hits.

“You can see a little bit of a difference in our kids,” the coach said after the blowout. “I told them to quit coming to the field scared.”
The Lions and their coach all left the diamond impressed with the varsity pitching debut of Brewer. The freshman pitched four innings, allowed five hits, struck out four and walked two, while working with freshman catcher Abby Murrish.
Brewer loaded the bases with no outs in the second inning and got out of the jam by striking out three Lancers in a row. In the fourth,http://www.gpf.it/valentinas.asp?tag/maglie-catania/, SME loaded the bases with no outs again, and the freshman held the visitors to one run.
With one out in the fourth, Garvin saved at least a couple of runs in center field by sprinting down a line drive to the left-field gap.
In Grammer’s eyes, that might have been the most impressive play of the afternoon.
“Your heart was racing a little bit since the bases were loaded,” Grammer said, “and then when she did that it was kind of like a relief.”
East’s threat died when Brewer snagged a waist-high line drive that came whizzing back at her.
Said Shield: “That was a pretty awesome catch.”
