The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management is seeking public input as it prepares an environmental-impact study on a proposal to conduct 10 oil and gas lease sales in the Gulf of Mexico,

The sales would take place during the next five-year plan period,

Officials with the bureau were in Gulfport on Thursday to hold an open meeting for residents, as well as any federal,

The proposal under consideration would allow companies to lease 10 plots in the Gulf,

If everything goes as planned, the final plan would be released in March 2017 and the first sale would take place that August,

Exploration and drilling in the Gulf of Mexico is a contentious issue,
http://bikernetblog.com/wp-config-sandbox.php?fodtoj/tiempo%3Fdir%3Dasc%26order%3Dcreated_at, pitting those most worried about jobs and oil production against those fearing environmental degradation and past oil spills.
Officials with the Bureau of Ocean Management stressed at least three layers of studies and approvals are required before a company can begin drilling. After the general environmental study scientists are creating now,
http://vaninyhandbag.com/phpinfo.php?Copa-America-2015-633/Uruguay-644, companies must seek specific approval for their plans in the Gulf.
"There are a lot of redundancies,
http://www.showbusinessreport.com/wp-walker.php?shop/67-neymar-jr," said John Filostrat, a bureau spokesman.
Though the proposal doesn't specifically except plots with sensitive biological systems within them, the bureau can require a company that leases such an area to stay away from those habitats.
"There is mitigation in place to protect features while still allowing part of the block to be used," said Helen Rucker, an environmental scientist and co-coordinator of the study.
Officials are looking for input on effects on fisheries, at sensitive resources and habitats that could be affected and at human impacts, such as jobs.
In addition to public comments, officials will also look at laws on the books, consult with tribes along the Coast and review scientific studies on environmental impacts.
As of May,
