The youngsters took part in Carolina Panther Thomas Davis's free football camp sponsored by his Defending Dreams Foundation at Revolution Park.
"We have an opportunity right now to defend each kid's dream so they never lose sight of what they want to do, never lose sight of their dream," said Davis, about the camp and his academy that teaches success skills to middle-schoolers.
The extra work in the community helped earn Davis the award for NFL's Man of the Year.
"We teach these kids discipline," he said, "because that's first and foremost important."
But there's more – skills about being good team players.
"We gotta treat them to respect each other," said Davis, "because the more they respect each other the more they can get done and the better they can become."
These are serious lessons for kids, but worth every minute of stretching and sweating for the chance to work with the pro's who are there to help and encourage them.
"Out here with all the guys from the team," said Panther Linebacker Luke Kuechley, referencing his teammates who joined him and the kids for the day. "It's just fun to be out here and have a fun camp for these kids."
The camp has grown, too – welcoming about 200 kids more than last year.
North Mecklenburg High School freshman linebacker DJ Thaxton has spent four years at Davis's academy, but didn't get to take part in the football camp last year. He's eager to take part in field work and lessons that make winners both on-field and off.
"We work on a lot of things to work on your character and about your character," said Thaxton, "to make sure you present yourself in a positive manner."
Learning that it's not all about touchdowns.. but scoring well for years to come.
