The Labour leadership race was last night plunged into a ‘dirty tricks’ row amid claims that candidate Liz Kendall had thrown a mobile phone at one of her staff.
Ms Kendall’s campaign angrily described the claims as ‘a total lie’ and accused critics of resorting to old-style Labour skulduggery.

A friend said: ‘These false smears are reminiscent of tactics that Labour has rightly left behind. Nothing will distract Liz from setting out to party members and supporters the change that Labour needs to win in 2020.’
Shadow health secretary Liz Kendall was first out of the blocks in the leadership race - announcing her bid with a heavily-Blairite pitch to appeal to middle class voters.
The Leicester West MP has impressed since being elected to Parliament in 2010 - doubling her majority last week despite the party's disastrous performance across the country.

Mr Hunt admitted he had been unable to win over the 35 MPs he needs to get his name on the ballot paper and backed Blairite contender Liz Kendall.
