Reader #5: This one-sport focus started with club soccer. That s where I first noticed coaches not wanting their players playing other sports and making it hard on them if they wanted to. Also, the whole scholarship talk for club players is a scam just as you described with the number of soccer players who actually were offered a scholarship. I have a son who played club soccer and the whole year-round thing finally burned him out and he was done. I had a daughter who was playing rec soccer and wanted to try out for a club team. We convinced her that she didn t want to do that, and she was not happy about it. A couple of years later she thanked us.
