Sustainability is too strongly tied to climate change in the
minds of I am not a scientist republicans who proclaim their ignorance
of science to justify their denial of climate change and support of the fossil
fuel status quo.
I think what bothers me the most is how republicans
can advocate free markets in energy, when it is anything but.
Utilities that burn coal are monopolies where ratepayers have no choice
but consume polluting electricity. If consumers put solar panels up, utilities
proclaim that those solar owners are leeches on the system and need to
pay solar fees to maintain the utility monopoly s expenses.
Oil
is controlled by royals and depots of OPEC, who have dropped the price of global
oil prices in an attempt to knock out higher-cost domestic oil production in
America. Oil-dependent states, such as Alaska and South Dakota, suffer because
of the manipulations of a cartel half a world away.
And how is this
fossil fuel status quo worth preserving?
Wind and solar are
domestic, price stable, and create stable economic development in rural
communities. You d think republicans would favor this.
