Maggie Gyllenhaal said she was rejected from a role because she was considered “too old” to be partnered with a 55-year old man. The actress shared that the rejection made her feel bad first, angry next, and then just amused. 
In an interview with the magazine, the Oscar-winning actress lamented that actresses still have to contend with a lot of negative things that can even surprise a veteran like her. She explained that she was recently told that she was already too old to play “the lover of a man who was 55.” She said that was really surprising for her and claimed it was hurtful at first. She added that the hurt turned into anger until the whole rejection became too funny. The actress however, refused to name what show it was specifically that made the rejection.
The actress also added that she still has faith that Hollywood will be much kinder to women in the future because at the present, some women artists are already given worthy projects, unlike before. A lot of actresses are doing incredible work right now, playing real women, complicated women,” said the actress, who won a Golden Globe in January for her performance in “The Honourable Woman,” where she played a Anglo-Israeli businesswoman. She said looking at the actresses who are doing great work makes her avoid feeling despair. 
Speaking with earlier this month, the actress also talked about actresses and the roles that they have to contend with. She said women are yet to be offered really good roles that are “credible.” For her part, she said she has been offered some characters that are unbelievable as well. “I can’t tell you some of the weird parts I’ve been offered to play, that I can’t recognize as any human being I’ve ever come into contact with,” she said. “People really like to see fucked-up crazy women, and really perfect powerful women,” she added. She said however that with “Mad Max,” things might be changing. She explained that watching Charlize Theron in the movie was an “astonishing” experience.
